    Geico Car Insurance Review in 2021

    Geico ranks third in our ranking of the best auto insurers, and scores highly for customer service, with policyholders saying they tend to recommend Geico to others.

    Is Geico Car Insurance Good?

    Yes, Geico is a good car insurance company for most drivers. Our annual study of auto insurance rates found Geico is one of the cheapest car insurance companies in the country, ranks second in our ranking of the Cheapest Car Insurance Companies, and manages to keep premiums low while still offering good customer service. In addition, our customer satisfaction survey found that Geico customers are among the most likely to recommend the company's car insurance to friends and family. Geico ranks third in our Best Car Insurance Company Rankings.

    Because Geico rates are so competitive, available data reveals that most riders are likely to be able to save money with Geico if they don't qualify for USAA insurance, which limits its membership to military personnel and their families. Younger drivers and individuals with spotty credit histories are excellent candidates to save money with Geico, although we found rates high for people with violations on their driving records.
     
    Geico ranks third on our list of best car insurance companies. Many respondents cited "solid [option] services and coverage as reasons for providing high scores, and the "ease of administration of online policies" and other easy-to-use features are among the standout attributes of Geico auto insurance policies.

     

    Geico Customer Service

     

    In our Best Insurance for Customer Service subranking, Geico tied with Farmer for fourth place. USAA leads the pack among auto insurers in this field, and State Farm and Nationwide hold a slight edge over Geico in customer satisfaction. The midpack ratings didn't tell the whole story, as survey respondents overall were happy with their experience. Of the survey respondents who did not file a car insurance claim with Geico, 53% showed complete satisfaction with the ease of contacting Geico customer service. Among respondents who filed claims, that number rose to 70%.

     

    Geico Claims Handling

    Although our survey respondents reported strong customer satisfaction with Geico car insurance as a whole, there were some weak spots. When it comes to handling claims, Geico is losing some ground to major competitors with medium-of-the-pack performance. 
     
    Of the survey respondents who filed a claim, 74% reported full satisfaction with the ease of filing, 66% reported full satisfaction with status updates during the claims process, and 70% reported full satisfaction with claim settlement. Although these scores sound good, they were beaten by competitors like USAA and Nationwide. One survey respondent said, "Outside of the claims process, yes, Geico has good customer service. During the claims process, no. Geico has poor customer service."

     

    Geico Customer Loyalty

    With a third overall ranking in our customer satisfaction survey, it should come as no surprise that Geico enjoys strong loyalty from its auto insurance policyholders. Geico earned a silver medal in subranking The Most Likely Recommended, and fourth place in our Best Insurance for Customer Loyalty subranking. Geico customers' first approach to the service resulted in 41% of respondents who had not made a claim saying they would be very likely to recommend Geico. Among those who have filed claims, that number rises to 49%.

    Geico's complaints

    Although most Geico auto insurance customers are happy with their policies, some state problems with customer satisfaction. Some respondents to our survey were unhappy with the resolution of the claims, while others cited dissatisfaction over the rate hike. However, this issue is typical among auto insurance companies in our survey.

    "Their insurance has increased in recent years but I have a very clean record. I want to check with other companies just to see if I still get the best deal."

    "It's too expensive, there are not big enough discounts during quarantine or low mileage."

    "Too expensive. It starts at a reasonable cost, then the rates go up quickly.

    "My daughter also had Geico and when she had an accident they dropped her as a customer."

    How Much does Geico Car Insurance Cost?

    Our annual study of the Cheapest Car Insurance Companies found that most people can save money with a Geico auto insurance policy, even taking into account variables like driving records and zip codes. 

    According to our data, Geico's average auto insurance rate is $1,100, making it the second cheapest auto insurance company in our study. The only large company cheaper for auto insurance is USAA, which has an average rate of $875, which is a drop of about 20% compared to geico rates. The national average in our study was $1,321, which is a 20% increase compared to Geico's average rate.
